Five people were sent to the hospital with minor injuries Friday afternoon after a light rail train hit a van in Columbia City.

One of the injured was a 6-year-old boy, according to the Seattle Fire Department.

The crash occurred about 3:25 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Way South and South Brandon Street.

The van was headed north when it reportedly made an illegal left turn at South Brandon Street and was struck by a southbound Link train, according to a Sound Transit spokesman.

The tracks are blocked in the area, so a bus shuttle has been established between the Mount Baker and Othello rail stations.

Southbound lanes of Martin Luther King Jr. Way South were blocked for about an hour.
